The Basse Area Council (BAC) through its chief executive officer Monday presented a cheque  of D35, 700 to the regional youth coordinator, earmarked for the forthcoming District Youth Congress.

CEO Yusupha Manneh said the presentation is another manifestation of the Council’s commitment in support of youth-led activities in the region, noting that the gesture will go a long way in making the congress successful. He informed that the gesture is not the first of its kind, recalling that they had previously made similar presentations, especially when the region hosted the National Youth Conference and Festival (NAYCONF) and the “Week of Friendship and Fraternity” best known as SAFRA.

Noting that youths are crucial to the development of the country, Manneh said investing in them is a worthwhile undertaking. He thus urged them to use the money for the purpose for which it is meant.

The regional youth coordinator of the region, Fabakary Sanneh, commended the interim management of the Council for the support, which he said is timely given that the congress is just around the corner.

He explained that the District Youth Council is mandated by the National Youth Council to hold periodic congresses to elect a new executive that will govern in the interest of young people in the region.

“BSAC has always been supportive to the youths of the region, especially when it comes to building their capacity. So this financial assistance did not come to us as a surprise. We will continue to strengthen our collaboration with the Council for the development of young people in the region and the country at large,” he remarked.

Sanneh seized the opportunity to thank the Ministry of Youth and Sports through the National Youth Council for its continued support to young people in the country. He said The Gambia is exemplary in the sub-region when it comes to the development of young people thanks to  the commitment of the leadership to youth empowerment.
