Speaking to Daily Observer’s URR correspondent shortly after the exercise, the chairman of the Basse Youth Association, Momodou Sellu Kamara, said they, as an association, deemed it necessary to organise such exercise in response to the national call by the president in cleaning the environment.

According to him, they are compelled to embark on the cleansing exercise, and it was their social responsibilities as citizens to do so. “Our association’s aims include working towards fostering mutual understanding among youths.  We decided to come here this day to answer to the noble call. This place is being used as a dumping ground for some time now and we feel that this place is a praying ground and also close to the cemetery. This is why we decided to clean the place.  We are indeed proud as an association to be associated with this wonderful initiative,” he explained.

He appealed to the Basse Area Council to identify a dumping site in the area, so that when such exercises of such nature are done, there will be a place to disburse the garbage. He also appealed to the council to help them with a tractor to transport the garbage. Ousainou MI Jallow, the social secretary of BYDA, also acknowledged the high turnout. Jallow used the occasion to appeal for the provision of cleansing materials such as rakes, brooms, wheelbarrows and dustbins for the association to continue their social responsibility.

Mbayang Johm, a member of BYA, also expressed happiness at the occasion, calling on the people of Basse to come together as one and continue the good work.
